Extended Working Life for Healthcare workers in the United States and Ireland

ABSTRACT

Policies to Extend Working Life (EWL) are proposed as a solution to the societal challenge of population ageing and anticipated increased pension costs. However in most OECD countries, there are existing gender inequalities in relation to employment and pension coverage. This poses the research question, what are  the likely implications of the introduction of EWL policies  as they are currently  constructed  for men and women?n Does this differ across occupational groups?  This paper is based on analysis of findings from a cross-national comparative study between the US and Ireland where 120 workers, 60 men and 60 women were interviewed. Findings suggest that EWL policies are likely to exacerbate existing gender inequalities and inequalities across occupations, based on health and precarity of work.

Providers of LTC in Europe – current situation and future challenges

ABSTRACT

Long term for elderly people is undergoing crucial changes throughout Europe. We are facing a shortage of staff, we are lacking the financial resources and we are experiencing a pressure on quality raise.
We are also having an expert discussion about how the care should be provided, discussions about integrated care, about deinstitutionalization, about some specific target groups such as people living with dementia, family involvement, community services, ethical issues etc.
What is going to be the future of long term care in Europe, what are the current challenges and the overwhelming European structures and are the European countries ready for all of that?

Experience-driven innovation and co-production in the mental health and substance abuse field

Abstract

How to improve services by facilitating user-driven innovation and co-production?
There is a great need to further develop services to people with mental health problems and substance abuse. But to get customized services, it's important that users participate in the development process. The very best is that service receivers are the direct driving force in development.
It is also a possibility that users take part in production of services by working as volunteers and peer workers. In Trondheim we have been working on developing models to realize such a innovation model. We have also been studying different models of how this can be organized and implemented.
However, such a development requires both a change in attitude and a paradigm shift in the occupational role of health and social workers. In The presentation will explain and reflect on what this changes causes.

Home care policies and experiences of caregivers
The Belgian situation

Abstract

Caregiving carried out by adults for other adults is increasing in Belgium, like around the world, as the demographics of many industrialized countries shift toward an older population with escalating care needs toward the end of life. Moreover, the number of caregivers from the family circle are increased and that all the more so as the low number of retirement homes and their prices lead the government to favor the maintenance of elderly people at home. Indeed, aging policies are more and more oriented towards these solutions. There are many reasons to defend this new perspective: it would cost less and would offer more guaranties for the preservation of autonomy for the elderly. However, these policies still generate support for professional and paraprofessional care teams, but also for family members, especially for women. When they still employed, they must find a balance between work and family life. This care can be a source of stress for family members caring for seniors in difficulty, but can also be a source of complicity and experience of life. We will present several research carried out in Belgium to understand these situations of care.

Improving patient quality of life by a comprehensive and innovative long-term care program at long-term therapy and care institution in Krakow, Poland.

Abstract

In the presentation „Improving patient quality of life by a comprehensive and innovative long-term care program at long-term therapy and care institution in Krakow, Poland” the structure of Poland’s biggest long-term therapy and care institution will be shown. Besides long-term stationary medical care service the institution provides long term stationary psychiatric medical services and both stationary and outpatient palliative care service. Available on-site there is also a non-stationary (outpatient) medical care center for physiotherapy of disabled patients. The presentation will be focused on innovative therapeutic methods such as hortitherapy (therapy using plants as main stimulation means), dog therapy (therapy using dogs as stimulants of patients’ motivation), music therapy and others. So called “Cyber Eye” device will be presented (a digital, PC-based device, used for stimulation of activity of the neurologically-impaired patients). Based on own experience the presentation will also cover a subject of significance of caregivers’ education and motivation. The holistic approach to delivery of adequate service for disabled persons will also be discussed.

Welfare system, aging population and long-term care services in Italy

Abstract

The paper analyses the development of the Italian welfare system and focuses on the recent transformations of social and welfare needs. These changes concern the governance of the system and the forms of social and health assistance, in response to emerging needs. The aging of the population in Italy is the ambit of welfare policies with greater social impact; the aging of the population is a constantly increasing trend. The Italian local welfare system is built on the analysis of the social needs of the population and the planning of social services in the area. The planning of services for the elderly is becoming more attentive to emerging welfare needs, and welfare systems are increasingly being require to give answers even for long-term care policies.

ABSTRACT

The first step in analyzing the social behavior of students is to understand their relationships and their attitudes. The first approaches to this study are in Moreno's works, which are based on the development of sociometric matrices. In some of our works it has been pointed out that more refined analysis tools can be obtained by exploiting some theoretical results of mathematical theories that take into account uncertainty in feelings and interpersonal communication. In this work we show how the theory of fuzzy sets and that of hyperstructures can make significant contributions both in the analysis of the degree of socialization in a group and in designing interventions to improve the aptitude for socialization and therefore to educate citizens.
